最近、比較級について書くことが多かったので、構文についてまとめようと思います。比較はとにかくわかりにくい構文が多いですよね。理屈で納得できるのは納得して、わかりにくいのは何度も音読して口に慣らせる感覚が大切になります。丸暗記はしない、というのを基本にしているサイトですが、やはり覚えなければならない表現や構文は出てきます。
何度も音読し、英作文などで積極的に使ってみることでマスターできます。

原級を使った構文
as~as ...can , as ~ as possible 「できるだけ～」
Come as soon as possible. = Come as soon as you can. できるだけ早く来なさい
as soon as possible (できるだけ早く）という表現は、頭文字をとって、「ASAP」などとも言われますね。会話でもよく使われる表現です。
as ~ as any... , as ~ as ever..., as ~ as can be 「どんな…にも劣らず～」
He is as wise as any. 彼は誰よりも賢い He is as great a man as ever lived. 彼は古今に類のない偉大な人物だ I am as happy as can be. この上なく幸せだ
この表現は最上級宇と同じように、強い表現として使われます。何回か音読して馴染みましょう。
-times as ~ as ... 「…の-倍～」
This dog is three times as big as that one. この犬の大きさはあの犬の3倍もある。
彼より3倍の量の本を持っている、など、使いやすい表現ですよね。英作文でもどんどん使いましょう。
as many as ~ , as much as ~ 「～もたくさん」
He spoke for as many as 5 hours. 彼は5時間も話した。 He spent as much as 100 pounds. 彼は100ポンドも使った。
You may eat as much as you like. 好きなだけ食べてもいいよ。As many men as came were caught. 来た人はみんな捕まった。のように、「～するだけ、すべて」のような意味にもなるので注意してください！
as good as ~ 「～も同然」「～をよく守る」
He is as good as dead. 彼は死んだも同然だ。 He is as good as his words. 彼は約束を守る。
He is all but dead. He is almost deadに言い換えもできます。
~ as well as ... 「...と同じくらい上手に」「…ばかりでなく～も」
I can't speak English as well as him. 私は彼と同じくらい上手に英語を話せない。I Learned from mistakes as well as success. 成功だけでなく、失敗からも学んだ。
not only A but also Bとの言い換えもできますね。I learned from not only success but also mistakes.
not so much as A as B 「Aというより、むしろB」
He is not so much a scholar as a writer. 彼は学者というより文章家だ。
直訳すると、彼は文章家であるほど学者ではない、というようになります。この表現も忘れやすいので、例文を何度か音読して口に慣らしましょう。
without so much as ~ 「～さえしないで」
He went away without so much as saying good-bye. 彼はさようならすら言わずに帰った。
not so much as ~ 「～すらしない」
He did not so much as apologize to me. 彼は私に謝りさえしなかった。
might as well ~ (as...) 「…するくらいなら～するほうが良い」
We might as well go home as wait here. ここで待つよりは家に帰った方がいい。
ちょっとあきらめの気持ちが表現できる構文です。
went so fat as to 「～さえした」
He went so far as to call her a fool. 彼は彼女を馬鹿とまで呼んだ。
原級だけでもかなりありますよね。
比較を使った構文
the 比較級, the 比較級 「～すればするほど…」
The more you have, the more you want. たくさん持てば持つほど、もっと欲しくなる。
この表現は、省略することも多いです。The more, the merrier. 多ければ多いほど楽しい。大歓迎です。映画やドラマでよく聞く表現ですね。
（all) the 比較級 for ( because of, because) 「…なので、いっそう」
I like him all the better for his faults. 私は彼の欠点でいっそう彼が好きだ
書き換えもできます。
- I like him none the less for his faults.
- I don't like him (any) the less because he has faults.
- He has faults, but I like him none the less.
- He has faults, nevertheless I like him,
比較級 and 比較級 「ますます～」
She is getting more and more famous. 彼女はますます有名になっている。
much ( still , even) less 「(否定文に続いて）まして～ない」let alone でもOK
I can't read French, much less (let alone) speak it fluently. 私はフランス語が読めない、まして流暢に話すなんてできない。

簡単に言うと、notは普通の打ち消し。「～ではない」noはもっと強い打ち消し「決して、少しも～ない」という違いがあります。
not more than = at most 「せいぜい」
He has not more than 10 dollars. 彼はせいぜい10ドルを持っている。
彼が持っているのは、客観的に見て、せいぜい10ドルくらいだろう・・というニュアンス
no more than = only 「たった」
He has no more than 10 dollars 彼はたった10ドルしか持ってない。
彼が持っているのが10ドル以上なのは絶対ない！という強い否定です。
not less than = at least 「少なくとも」
He has not less than 10 dollars. 彼は少なくとも10ドルは持っている。
客観的に見て、彼が持っているお金は10ドルを下回らないだろう、というニュアンス。
no less than = as much as 「～も」
He has no less than 10 dollars. 彼は10ドルも持っている
彼が持っているのが10ドルを下回るなんて、絶対ない！というニュアンス
no more ~ than ... 「…でないのと同じく、～ではない」
He is no more than a genius than I. 彼は、私と同様に天才なんかじゃない
私も、彼も天才じゃない、という両方を否定します。次のno less との違いに注意しましょう。
no less ~ than ... 「…同様」「…に劣らず」
The truth is no less strange than fiction. 真実は小説に劣らず不思議なものだ。
両方肯定にする表現です。小説も真実も、不思議ですよ、という意味。
know better than to 「～しないだけの分別がある」
I know better than to quarrel with a policeman. 警官とけんかするようなばかではない。= I am not so foolish as to quarrel with a policeman.
less A than B 「Aより、むしろB」
It was less a question than a statement. それは質問というより主張だった
No...less ~than- 「‐ほど～でない(しない)人はいない」
Nobody does less study than you. あなたほど勉強しない人はいない。
最上級を使った構文
the second (third, forth) 2（3，4）番目に～な
Canada is the second largest country in the world. カナダは世界で二番目に大きな国だ。
the last A to do 「最も～しそうもないA」
She is the last person to tell a lie. 彼女はうそをつくような人間ではない。
その他最上級の表現
- at best せいぜい
- at least 少なくとも
- at most せいぜい
- make the best of～make the most of ~ ~を最大限利用する
- not in the least 少しも～ない
比較の言い換え表現
比較の内容は原級⇔比較⇔最上級で書き換えができます。受験でもよく出ますので、書き換えできるように練習しましょう。
信濃川は日本で一番長い川です。

- The Shinano is the longest of all river in Japan.
- No other river is as long as the Shinano.
- The Shinano is longer than any other river in Japan.
- No other river in Japan is as long as the Shinano.
健康は何よりも尊い
- Nothing is as precious as health.
- Health is as precious as anything else.
- Health is more precious than anything else.
- Nothing is more precious than health.
- Health is the most precious thing.
- Health is the most precious of all thing.
こんな美しい湖を見たことがない
- I have never seen such a beautiful lake before.
- This is as beautiful a lake as any that I have ever seen.
- No other lake that I have ever seen is as beautiful as this.
- This lake is more beautiful than any that I have ever seen.
- I have never seen a more beautiful lake than this.
- This is the most beautiful lake I have ever seen.
- This lake is the most beautiful of all that I have ever seen.
以上です！いかがでしょうか。かなり量がありますよね。比較の表現を知っていると、かなり使える表現も増えますし、長文に出てきた時に慌てずにすみます。大事なのは「音読」です。何度も読んで、そして使っていきましょう。
