英語では wh-cleft(ウェイ・クレフト)とも呼ばれます。
- I need more time.(もっと時間が必要だ)
- What I need is more time.(私に必要なのは、もっと時間だ)
分裂文(It is ~ that)との違い
It is ~ that ...
|---|---|---|
| 分裂文(強調構文) | It is health that is the most important.(一番大切なのは健康だ) | 文の前半(It is の直後) |
| 疑似分裂文 | What is the most important is health.(一番大切なのは健康だ) | 文の最後 |

| What impressed me most was ~ | 最も印象に残ったのは〜だ | What impressed me most was the view from the mountain.(最も印象に残ったのは、山からの眺めだ) |
疑似分裂文の仲間(the thing / all / the reason)

(I need more time.)
(What I need is more time.)
|---|---|---|
| I want to study abroad.(5語) | What I want to do in the future is (to) study abroad.
| Health is the most important.(5語) | What is the most important in our lives is health.
| I was surprised by his kindness.(6語) | What surprised me most was his kindness.
| We need more parks in this city.(7語) | What this city needs is more parks for children.
| I learned the importance of teamwork.(6語) | What I learned from the club activity is the importance of teamwork.
語数が増えているのは、What の部分に in the future や in our lives、from the club activity のような情報を足しやすいからです。
✕ What I want to say are that we should study more.
○ What I want to say is that we should study more.
✕ What surprised me is his kindness.(昨日の話の場合)
○ What surprised me was his kindness.
| What ~ is のあと | 例文 |
|---|---|
What I need is a new computer. |
| to不定詞(または原形) | What I want to do is (to) travel abroad. |
| that節 | What I want to say is that English is useful. |
What I enjoy most is reading books. |
✕ What I did yesterday was studied English.
○ What I did yesterday was (to) study English.
✕ What I want to say is English is useful.(話し言葉ではあるが、作文では that を入れる)
○ What I want to say is that English is useful.
The reason is because ~ にしない
The reason ~ is のあとは because ではなく that
The reason(理由)と because(なぜなら)は意味が重なるので、The reason is because ~ は作文では避けましょう。
✕ The reason I like summer is because I can swim in the sea.
○ The reason I like summer is that I can swim in the sea.
What I want to say is that ~ は便利なぶん、使いすぎると回りくどく聞こえます。What is important is ~ や What I learned is ~ など、内容に合った型を選ぶのがコツです。
Should students use smartphones in class?(生徒は授業中にスマートフォンを使うべきか)
|---|---|---|
I think students should use smartphones in class. | What I believe is that students should be allowed to use smartphones in class. |
1 | Smartphones help students find information quickly. | What makes smartphones useful is that students can find information quickly. |
Smartphones are useful tools for learning. | What is important is to use smartphones as tools for learning, not for playing games. |
応用:「The biggest change ~ will be that ~」でさらに長くする
How do you think schools will change in the next 20 years?(今から20年後、学校の授業はどう変わっていると思いますか?)
- Students will study with AI.(5
|---|---|---|
| ① ふつうの文 | Students will study with AI.
| ② 疑似分裂文にする | What will change is that students will study with AI.
| ③ 主語を「the + 最上級 + 名詞」にする | The biggest change will be that students will study with AI.
| ④ 主語に「どこで」を足す | The biggest change that will happen in schools will be that students will study with AI.
| ⑤ 主語に「いつ」を足す | The biggest change that will happen in schools in the next 20 years will be that students will study with AI.
| ⑥ that節の中を具体的にする | The biggest change that will happen in schools in the next 20 years will be that each student will study with a personal AI tutor that understands their strengths and weaknesses.
1つ目は主語の名詞を最上級(the biggest、the most important など)で強めること。
|---|---|---|
| ① 主語の名詞 | 最上級で強める | the biggest change / the most important skill |
| ② 主語の後ろ | 関係代名詞で「どこで・いつ」を足す | that will happen in schools in the next 20 years |
| ③ that節の中 | with ~、関係代名詞、such as ~ で具体化する | with a personal AI tutor that understands their strengths and weaknesses |
What do you think is the most important skill for young people in the future?(これからの若者にとって、最も大切な能力は何だと思いますか?)
- ふつうの文:Communication skills are important.(4語)
The most important skill that young people will need in the future will be the ability to communicate with people from different cultures, both face to face and online.(29語)
ここでも、①主語を最上級で強め(the most important skill)、②主語に「誰が・いつ」を足し(that young people will need in the future)、③ is / will be のあとを具体的にしている(the ability to communicate with people from different cultures, both face to face and online)のがわかります。
|---|---|---|
| The biggest change that will occur in ~ in the next ~ years will be that ~ | 今後〜年で〜に起こる最大の変化は…
| The most important thing that ~ can do is (to) ~ | 〜ができる最も大切なことは…
| The main reason why ~ is that ~ | 〜の主な理由は…
| The greatest benefit that ~ will bring is that ~ | 〜がもたらす最大の利点は…
| The biggest problem that ~ face today is that ~ | 〜が今日直面している最大の問題は…
For example, the AI tutor will give students questions that match their level.
- I need a long vacation.
- The beautiful sunset impressed me.
- We should save energy.
- I like the friendly atmosphere of my school.
- I learned that failure is not the end.
|---|---|
| 1 | What I need is a long vacation. |
| 2 | What impressed me was the beautiful sunset. |
| 3 | What we should do is (to) save energy. |
| 4 | What I like about my school is its friendly atmosphere. |
| 5 | What I learned is that failure is not the end. |
- What I want to say is that ~、What is important is ~、What surprised me was ~ などの型をそのまま使える
- What 節は単数扱い、is のあとは名詞・to不定詞・that節
- The reason is that ~(because ではない)
- The biggest change that ~ will be that ~ のように、主語に情報を足すと1文で20〜30語書ける
